Apart
from several historical museum, Punta
Arenas doesn't show much interest... and
we're severely lacking in motivation to
organised a happening in the main
This
city's main raison d'etre is to serve as a
strategic port for the Navy and a starting
point for the many travelers on the way down
to explore national parks and Glaciers.
The
team explores its chaotics street where
electrical and telephone wires decorate the
buildings like lights on a Christmas tree.
Taxi drivers honk their horns at huge lorries
hauling even bigger containers and buses full
of commuters come and go. We haven't
been in such a big city for months now and the
smell of the CO2 irritates our noses and
throats.
This
city has a strange feel to it: it ressembles
those lost soviet cities with on each corner,
soldiers seemingly waiting for something or
someone. Most of the buildings and shops
seem to frozen in time ... frozen back
in the 70s. We are told that a third of the
population is from Croatia.
Today,
it's the second day of school and the
streets are full of blazers, grey trousers,
ties and short skirts. When asked, some
of these school boys and girls tell us about
their need to discover the world before
settling down for a job.
In
Winter, the average temperature is of 3° and
right now at the end of summer,
it's 11°. Today the sun is extremely bright
and white. Punta Arenas is famous for its
violent winds ... and it is said that in the
past, cats have been seen tossing and turning
at these moments of great winds.
At
dusk, we head off to a bar for a drink.
Inside, locals drink rhum and
other hard-core alcohols while the bar-tender
tells us more about the in's and out's of the
bar. This place is full of sailors from
oil-tankers and fishing boats... they drink
away the night and seek out women.
Our brains are deadened by the heavy smoke and
we too drink and think of the life of
these men.
This
is how we spent our in day in Punta Arenas...
people watching costs nothing and is
always full of interesting lessons to
learn.
But
less talk... why don't you check out the video
?
