Apart from several historical  museum, Punta Arenas doesn't show much interest... and we're severely lacking in motivation to organised a happening in the main

This city's main raison d'etre is to serve as a strategic port for the Navy and a starting point for the many travelers on the way down to explore national parks and Glaciers.

The team explores its chaotics street where electrical and telephone wires decorate the buildings like lights on a Christmas tree. Taxi drivers honk their horns at huge lorries hauling even bigger containers and buses full of commuters  come and go. We haven't been in such a big city for months now and the smell of the CO2 irritates our noses and throats.

This city has a strange feel to it: it ressembles those lost soviet cities with on each corner, soldiers seemingly waiting for something or someone.  Most of the buildings and shops seem to frozen  in time ... frozen back in the 70s. We are told that a third of the population is from Croatia.

Today, it's  the second day of school and the streets are full of blazers, grey trousers, ties and short skirts.  When asked, some of these school boys and girls tell us about their need to discover the world before settling down for a job.

In Winter, the average temperature is of 3° and right now  at  the end of summer, it's 11°. Today the sun is extremely bright and white. Punta Arenas is famous for its violent winds ... and it is said that in the past, cats have been seen tossing and turning at these moments of great winds.

At dusk, we head off to a  bar for a drink. Inside, locals  drink  rhum and other hard-core alcohols while the bar-tender tells us more about the in's and out's of the bar. This place is full of sailors from oil-tankers and fishing boats... they drink away the night  and seek out women.  Our brains are deadened by the heavy smoke and we too drink  and think of the life of these men.

This is how we spent our in day in Punta Arenas... people watching  costs nothing and is always full of  interesting lessons to learn.

But less talk... why don't you check out the video ?

Close to the Plaza de Armas stands a very little bar, with tainted windows, and no billboard: the Kiosco Roca, famous since more than 60 years, for feeding the many students and workers in search of a cheap meal. Accompanied with nomads, the Team has its lunch there.

In front of us, a 5 meters long counter, stools, no chairs and no tables, many pictures and objects (and even pants !) dedicated to the local soccer team, a poster of the Pope, a radio playing loudly old Chilean hits, and quantities of beer crates and other sparkling drinks.

As usual, we stick out. Everybody looks at us as we walk in. We sit down, ready to taste the unique item on the menu: chorizo sandwiches. So good with a local beer, the famous 'Austral'!

Once the locals get used to our presence, time starts again and the nomads become Chileans eating at lunch time...

But watch the video...

"Ok, open ticket!"

We've discovered on the net that there are still available seats for our return back in Europe.

We're asking you to choose, Virtual, what we should do next.

- leave for Uruguay, only possible destination because of lack of funds

- head back to Europe at the end of the month

Decide and leave us message on the Forum.

Whatever your decision is, we'll still have a great party in Rome, as promised !

The music that you hear every day on the videos is chosen by Nicole and Marco.

Usually, they try to find the right rhythm in their mind and then find it in one of the numerous Cds that we carry with us. Or they go to the closest record shop, looking for rare pearls.

They are more keen on non commercial songs, according more importance to rhythm. But we would still like to thank the following artists for their collaboration: the Japanese Photek, the Icelandic Bjork, the American Ben Harper and many other unknown artists from the countries we've been through.

The second video is not a video !

Instead of images, here's a song by Myriam Hernandez, rated top ten in the Chilean charts: Lena y Fuego.

Click on the photo and close your eyes !

PS: you can also download it on your computer (like the videos)

Following Vicio's idea on chat, and accepted by you Virtual Travelers, the Car@van will be on the legendary island of Chiloe.

The trip should take quite long , and we can't guarantee to be there in time for the next chat, tomorrow at 10.00 pm GMT.

By the way, the voting form expires tomorrow... have you voted yet ?

See you tomorrow.

The Team.
