Since we
came back from the island, we really feel like
being on the road again and meet people !
Today, we go to Segenter, a Sasak village in
the north of Lombok. We are accompanied by our
inseparable Mun - our new Indonesian Hook,
you can hear him sing on the video.
We leave the main road to drive for about 2
km towards the island's center. As we arrive
in the village, we astonished by the fact it
is so tidy and calm. Many men and women are
working in the fields, but as usual, everybody
notices our arrival. We are welcomed by many
children, who escort us to the village's
center. People coming to meet us are all quite
young, with many young mothers carrying their
baby - here, people often marry when they're
very young, sometimes at the age of 16. Only
one boy speaks English, and helps us to talk
with the others, helped by Mun. Then we meet
Saramon, the village's chief. He's a a very
charismatic young man - on the video, at the
end, the one who smokes a cigarette.
Considered as the only one to be able to solve
any problems, he was elected a few months ago.
A few hours later, Vale plays with the
children, Maya tastes (and regrets it
immediately) a spicy soup eaten by a 3 years
old girl. Aleko and Marco prepare something.
The adults are now coming back from the
fields, tired and very shy. A strong rain
begins to fall, and we shelter with the
children under a 'serambi' - a sort of veranda
used to receive friends, but also as a
playground. Then Aleko grabs his guitar and
Marco his jembé... they begin to play. But in
the beginning, the atmosphere is quite cold.
That's only after a few songs that people
smile and move. At the end comes an old lady,
who seems mad and starts a strange dance with
Maya. And everybody laughs.
We leave the village before the night. As
we go back to the minibus, not only the
children but the whole village is accompanying
us. Saramon salutes us for a long time,
inviting any nomads to come back here, one
day.

We
would like to highlight a fact:
"Tourism is the globe's main
economic activity." About 1
billion of people travel every
year, 500 millions of
international flights, about 6% of
the planet's global revenues. And
this figure will get bigger as
long as the means of transport and
communication develop.
The Car@van considers that mass
tourism can have very negative
effects on culture and nature in
the visited countries, and
especially in the southern ones.
Our days spent in a traditional
Indonesian village confirmed our
opinion about the way it is
necessary to travel. Meeting
people, cultures and natural
environment must be done with
respect and listening. Not
encourage destruction and
exploitation, but try to apply
these few universal principles:
humility, curiosity, exchange.

"Zinedine
Zidane"
Every country has its own
culture, nature, political,
religious status, traditions...
But one only name seems to be
known unanimously : Zinedine
Zidane', the soccer's star.
Ten years ago, it was Maradona,
five years later, Baggio, today
Zidane. Anywhere in Africa, Asia
or America, it is the easiest way
to begin a chat: tell the player's
name.
As some people call Aleko 'Batistuta',
he answers with a smile: "No,
French... World Champion !".

When I'm
in a bad mood, I stay on my own,
asking myself thousand questions.
I'd like to share with you a
personal thought: "What is
the meaning of life ?" For
some people, always try to earn
more and more, for some others,
trying to become more human.
Increase a capital with inert
things or live experiences through
living, human things.
That's the famous opposition
between BE or HAVE. Like you (I
think), I believe in the value of
'Be', but what does it really mean
to BE?
Be alive, interested, work for
something I believe in, listen to
the others, do something good with
my life.
see you soon... Theo
