12/20/2000   George   S33°57   E22°27   +9 The day begins with a solid breakfast in a colonial villa of the XIXth century. Leaving George's urban zone, we enter in a township. All the books underline the high risk of violences and aggression against white people; but we believe in humility and tolerance between cultures. Passers-by tell us where to find a traditionnal Xhosa village, but we finally get lost in the green valleys of the oceanic coast. We ask our way to peasants, children, elderly persons: they answer with warm smiles and not a single word of english. Then, following the indications of black hands showing the horizon, we arrive in Khulani, a Xhosa women's village. They welcome us like a great event, and, dressed with ceremonial clothes, improvise a traditionnal danse show. The end comes with a tremendous parody on men. Magic in the Xhosa tribe: malignant magic in general, the biggest fear of Xhosa is to be possessed by evil spirits. The principal source of evil is called tokoloshe, a spirit that lives in the water, created by witches. But if someone drowns, and his body can't be found, it is believed the person has joined the People of the Seas. And if he reincarnates, the person will have a higher level of conscience and skills. Many Xhosa children are amputated of the top of their ring finger, to take away bad fortune. Chamans (spiritual healers) are called igqirha. The big 'Eye': 10 days passed and the Car@van grows on the road.
